Fridge light won’t come on ? Here’s what you need to check

It’s always frustrating to discover that the refrigerator light won’t come on, especially when it makes finding food difficult. This common problem can have many causes, from a simple burnt-out bulb to more complex electrical problems.

This article explores the possible reasons why the fridge light stays off, and suggests easy-to-implement solutions to remedy the problem. Whether it’s to avoid food waste or simply to restore daily comfort, these practical tips will help to quickly resolve this domestic inconvenience.

Identifying the fault

When you open your refrigerator door and the light doesn’t come on, this may indicate a problem. Possible causes include a lighting malfunction or the opening and closing mechanism.

Before any intervention, it is crucial to determine the exact origin of the fault. Several components need to be checked : the lamp, the socket, the switch and the thermostat. Each of these components may be at the root of the problem. This article will guide you in identifying the source of the malfunction and carrying out the necessary repairs.

Checking the refrigerator lamp

If your fridge light won’t come on, the bulb may be faulty. To check this, start by unplugging the fridge to ensure your safety.

Next, locate the lamp cover inside the refrigerator and remove it using a flathead screwdriver. Unscrew the bulb and inspect it visually : black spots or a broken filament indicate a defective bulb.

If it looks intact, use a multimeter set to ohms to test continuity. Place the test pins on the bulb connectors; if no value appears, the bulb is out of order and must be replaced by a compatible new one.

If the light doesn’t go out, use a multimeter in continuity mode Unplug the fridge, remove the switch and place the touch points on its terminals. Finally, check that the thermostat knob is positioned above 1; if necessary, replace the thermostat by following the appropriate steps.
